A community-driven electric car-sharing initiative that strengthens local governance, reduces CO₂ emissions, and promotes inclusive, sustainable mobility in Reggio Emilia.
The NINA Car Sharing Project is a multidimensional initiative that integrates environmental sustainability, technological innovation, and community empowerment. Built through a collaborative process involving the municipality, local associations, and residents, the project has established a solid model of participatory governance formalized through an Agreement of Citizenship. Its electric car-sharing service—managed via a user-friendly app and supported by local charging infrastructure—enabled 414 rentals and over 9,400 kilometers traveled during the first six months.
The project generated significant environmental benefits, including a reduction of 1,463 kilograms of CO₂, lower traffic volumes, and decreased pressure on urban space. It also strengthened social inclusion by providing flexible and accessible mobility options co-designed with residents of Centro Storico and Crocetta. Through this process, NINA enhanced digital skills, encouraged sustainable behavior, and fostered a stronger sense of community.
While the initiative did not create new employment opportunities and did not address waste-management practices, its strong institutional cooperation, territorial cohesion, and intergenerational outlook make it a replicable model for neighborhood-level sustainable mobility. With further investment in economic sustainability and expanded environmental actions, NINA has the potential to evolve into a long-term benchmark for smart, community-centered urban mobility.
