Illustrated map Torre Spaccata

CROMA – Claudia Romagnoli

The illustrated map of the district of Torre Spaccata is a mural painting that represents the most emblematic places of the neighborhood, through symbolic images. Thanks to the artistic vision of CROMA, the streets, buildings and historic places of Torre Spaccata evoke the values and stories that have helped shape the territory. The work thus becomes not only a map of the neighborhood, but a guide for inhabitants and visitors. Who enters Torre Spaccata can through the map live the experiences of communities, stratified in time and urban space, through the representation of buildings, values and activities that take place every day in the neighborhood. The result is the enhancement of sociality and cultural ferment in this important south-eastern quadrant of the capital.

The work is part of a path consisting of two additional maps that represent one the district of Alessandrino and the other that of Centocelle. The aim of the itinerary is to recreate a shared identity of communities that can go beyond administrative boundaries and enhance common elements and stories, as well as the symbolic places of the three neighborhoods. The works were created as part of the European project Horizon 2020 – Open Heritage and inaugurated during the event Living Memory Exhibition, 25/09/2021. The aim of the project as well as that of the event is to enhance the cultural heritage of the district through the promotion of a collective historical memory and the different narratives of the multiple communities of the territory.

The work is part of a wider process of enhancement of the cultural heritage of the periphery oriented to the capacity of local communities and the development of a plurality of cultural and community services. The realization of the work therefore aims to bring out not only the historical and cultural wealth of the district, but also the cultural, social and human heritage. The choice to depict the map on one of the walls of the Torre Spaccata Market is representative of the desire to draw attention to the central places in the life of the district and to activate new processes of collaborative and sustainable development.

The path was developed thanks to the support and contribution of Luiss and LabGov.city who contributed through the Co-Roma project to the realization of the work and the support of local actors in related activities.

Moreover, the works have a symbolic value in promoting a new vision of the district, both to activate a virtuous circle that can lead to sustainable economic development, social and environmental of the neighborhoods starting from the promotion of cultural heritage and local creativity. This, in fact, is the main objective of the cooperative district CooperACTiva one of the first cooperatives of communities born in an urban context such as Rome. CooperACTiva is committed to promoting a collaborative vision of the neighborhood in which different actors can work together for the development of the territory. For this reason the cooperative stimulates processes in which the value generated is reinvested to enhance the territory itself through the improvement of social, technological and environmental infrastructure. The activities of CooperACTiva are intertwined with the commitment of a multiplicity of local actors, including the Fusolab, adna, and the Community for the public park of Centocelle, and thanks to the technical support of Di Donato, contribute to the development of activities as well as the realization of the works and the path in a sustainable way.
